Avoiding Direct Eye Contact
“Dogs communicate with humans in ways that are significantly different from human social interactions. In human society, eye contact is a common form of communication, but in the canine world, overly direct and prolonged eye contact can be interpreted as a challenge. Therefore, if you try to maintain eye contact with your dog and they choose to gently lower their head or avoid your gaze, it doesn’t mean they are disinterested or afraid of you.
In fact, avoiding eye contact is a dog’s way of showing politeness and respect. By doing so, they are telling you, ‘I respect you and don’t want to cause you any stress or discomfort.’ When dogs have established a deep bond with you, they might occasionally choose to make brief eye contact, which is an expression of trust.
